Adoption & Fostering

Links offers a specialist psychology service to adoptive parents and foster carers.

We recognise that children who have experienced trauma, abuse and neglect can have attachment difficulties, heightened emotional needs, and behavioural problems that may make it difficult to parent them and for the child to manage relationships in other environments, such as school. Their needs may not be well understood by other child-care professionals. Equally, the strategies used to manage such behaviour must be carefully tailored to their individual needs.

Specialist services to families
  • One-to-one support to adopters or foster carers  - to help develop an understanding of the child’s needs or difficulties and develop strategies to manage them

  • Attachment-focused therapy to explore ways to promote the attachment between parent/carer and child

  • Life Story Work with children who have complex birth family backgrounds. This may involve one-to-one work with the child, support to parents/carers to produce an age-appropriate life story book, or consultation to parents/carers to develop ways in which they can talk to their child about their background histories

  • Parenting Courses – Links is currently planning to deliver parenting courses tailored specifically for adoptive parents and foster carers. If you are interested, please contact us with your details and we will let you know when a course is running near you. We take enquiries from individual parents and organisations
